“Overload” By Arthur Hailey- Book Review

The last week was pretty tough. It was one of those times when you are just restless and nothing seems to be enough. But one book came to my rescue – Overload by Arthur Hailey.

The book follows an interesting plot/story of an electricity generating company GSP&L in California, the power crisis not so far in time, strong opposition to new plants and those few people who liked to say their point with a bang (in this case, explosives killing GSP&L employees). The book presents both for and against views well. It shows the interaction amongst different characters, issues involved, views and perspectives in an interesting manner.

It follows Nim, a sincere employee of GSP&L, someone who realizes need for power and pushes for new setups, outspoken and straightfoward, and at the same time a person who does makes mistakes, realizes them and tries to mend.

The novel does starts slow and a bit boring. But the moment you begin reading about unexpected things happening at GSP&L and plans for more, then it is just difficult to put this book down.

The best part, according to me, is the way different characters from different backgrounds have been portrayed and made part of this one story. Besides GSP&L at the center of this play, there is a journalist looking for spice and reality behind words, an organization fighting for environment, an employee doing his job with utmost sincerity and ready to oppose even the powerful, a so-called-leader mending his ways to create panic, and a quadriplegic who doesn’t gives up easily. In this novel, there are many stories creating one big picture.

My review: I would give it 3.5/5.

Surprise, Surprise

Well, it’s not everyday that you come across something that really surprises you and forces you to look for more. It did happened with me this time….

It started with a desperate search for a tourist destination. I do need a break ! It was by chance that I thought of “glancing” at the State government sites to see what is their that they recommend. But, WOW !

I must say this…..it was truly INCREDIBLE. This was the heart of Incredible India, this was Madhya Pradesh

http://www.mptourism.com/web/home.aspx

The site was not just beautiful, catchy and experiential. It made you look forward to the next thing. It provided you the best of the glimpses of Indian culture in one click. It truly brought the hidden treasures of this country alive.

I might be going a bit overboard, but hey…..a good work deserves a clap :)

For all those years that I thought and hated slow, boring, text-only government websites, this was one particularly awesome exception. This site is definitely the next big step to let tourists know that there is much more there to see.

The one thing I know for sure now is that I am “soon” going to a beautiful place called Madhya Pradesh !

What development ???

India is Shining…….India is Growing……India is Developing……

Yes, it all sounds nice. And I feel proud to hear such things. But is this really true, or are we forgetting the downturns in the the celebration of a few good deeds.

A few days back, I read articles (again) on how India is ready to lead the world, how it is going to be a major economic force etc etc. I am glad that even today we are able to create jobs and are facing somewhat favorable markets rather a complete downturn. Yes, you might call that growth. But, is that Development ?

I am one of those millions who travel daily by public transport. I have to see the thousands walking on the roads which barely have a walking space. I have to ensure that I leave office before it gets dark, becasue the city is unsafe. I have to walk through that dust cloud everyday which surrounds the office areas thanks to bad (and barely any) roads.

What we call the metros, are increasingly becoming concrete jungles. You can build number of blue and shiny buildings in Gurgaon, but what about the basic roads which are the links to all ! You can introduce all kind of low floor buses in Delhi, but what about traffic rules that are openly flouted. You can introduce as much of new schemes for poor, but whats the point when the concerned doesn’t gets a clue !

We are good, indeed amazing, at writing laws, policies, theories etc on how to “develop”. But development is not about those hundreds of pages in leather cover books, its beyond that. It is the life of a normal person. It is the ground on which we walk. It is the breaths of a city.

I am a proud citizen and I am happy of various good things like Metro, flyovers, more colleges, more offices and better incomes. Even then, these things are the “means” to development and not the “ends”. Those ends require much more work and much more dedication which I am sure we all have. I believe with more open dialogue, fast implementation, and better judgement we can reach that level.

Throwing away the poor to build a cement block is not the solution, but creating the jobs that result in societal upliftment is.

What do you think about it ?

Memoirs

It seems like years that I visited my blog. The last four weeks went so fast. What did I did…..I don’t even know where to start.

I joined a new internship, and finally got a taste of the working life – 12 hrs of computer, endless tea and coffee, team work, research, good criticism etc etc…..bottom line – it is a good change !

I went to a friend’s engagement – grand lunch, brilliant ceremony, awesome friends, bonfire, aura of Dehradun’s most beautiful area and the wonderful weather, sleepless nights, long – slow yet enjoyable 10 hrs train journey !

I met old friends – the charm of old things just keeps on getting better :)

I tried cooking – I am truly bad at it, and now officially banned from the kitchen ! I guess its better to just watch Masterchef then trying to be one.

I watched brilliant movies – “Kahaani” and “Paan Singh Tomar”……respect !

Mom said never talk to strangers – but one of those strangers helped me reach back home when I got lost in that weird place (I still don’t know its name)

I hate e-books – in my opinion they have killed the charm of reading books + I always doze off and still not able to complete mere 150 pages book :/

Going bankrupt – learned my lesson to always check the price tag carefully before payment - I JUST MISSED ONE ZERO

Well, I had some great, funny, cherishing and beautiful moments in the last 4 weeks. And yet, I wait for the new things and new memories to be remembered :)

Go Green

We all love the green trees, colorful flowers, the smell of the first rain, the lovely blue sky etc. They are always part of our poems, dreams, games, and life. But how many times do we really care about it? How many times do we actually do something about it?

These were the questions I asked myself more than once, and then I decided to do some small things which can make big difference to this World. They do not take much of your time and they still make this World a better place.

1. It’s not that hard to wait for a few minutes and throw that trash in a dustbin

2. Just once try to have a plant and water it, you would feel a satisfaction after seeing those shiny green leaves

3. If you really like flowers, then stop plucking them

4. You don’t need a whole tub of water for toothbrush, if you really care to bath!

5. Next time you plan to throw those half complete notebooks, just remember that you can make a rough notepad, gift wrapper, kite, cover etc with it and save some good old tree out there

6. That water used to wash your vegetables can be reused to water the small plant near your window

7. Bamboo slippers are not just good but fancy and comfortable

8. Walking those few steps to the shopping centre can help you to keep your weight under control, rather than always being in cars

9. Reality check – Carrying a jute bag to the market is better and cheaper

10. Stop buying those expensive leather bags, you can spend those thousands on better stuff !

These were just small things that may sound childish or weird to some, but they can make big difference. You can save some plant, reduce that smoke that kills you, save some of that plastic garbage, let some animal live, and give water to some thirsty child.

It’s simple and worthy to be a little considerate to this beautiful world of ours. So what are you waiting, Go Green.

If there are some ways you know to save our environment, I would love to hear them.

Exploring Delhi

DSC01324

After a long wait, I finally had the opportunity to go on a trip around Delhi with my friends. Even after being a resident of Delhi all my life, there was still so much to see and explore. This trip was also important for a non-Delhite friend whom we had promised to take around.

So, here we were 3 crazy girls ready for a whole day trip. It started with the National Museum right in the morning, where we able to gather some bits of history on coins, weapons, paintings, caves etc. It was a nice experience as we soon realized our lack of history knowledge !

And there we hopped on the cute Hop On- Hop Off (HoHo) bus – a Delhi Tourism bus which comes at regular intervals – on which we headed to Red Fort or Lal Quila in Old Delhi. It was the center of Rule for many years in the once strong 17th century Mughal Empire of Shah Jahan. Now it was a red building in the Old City (then known as Shahajahanabad) where Indian Flag stood proudly. It is now the landmark for hosting the flag on Independence day. Right from the marble courtyards to beautiful gardens, the fort was spectacular. It was surrounded by man-made moats once filled with water, and it is still a mystery as to how the water was brought from the once-close-river Yamuna around the fort. The Kings and Queens once resided here and had some of the biggest traders in the market right opposite the fort.

The market known as Chandni Chowk surprises you in more than many ways. We saw a temple, a Gurudwara, a church and a Masjid standing close at this one place. The whole city seemed to have been compressed here with people at every corner.

After a great visit to the Red Fort we hopped on the blue bus again and took to the next wonder called Humayun Tomb. It is a well restored place and a pinnacle of Mughal Art that later ruled North India for a long time. The tomb build in 16th century is the original for Taj Mahal. The Tomb houses graves of many Mughal Emperors and Royals. We, being ourselves, explored every single corner of this beautiful tomb. The gardens, balconies, small canopy like sitting places, huge iron and wooden gates – everything had a character of its own.

It was so mesmerizing that we ended up missing our HoHo bus ! Well after taking the next bus we went to Lajpat Market where we ended our truly memorable day with a glass of fresh Juice.

Yes, it was a small trip. But considering the Marvels these places were, we did justice by giving them enough time and attention. More than anything, it was the company I enjoyed the most. Being with friends and exploring a whole new chapter of history is just too exciting. We did wish we could see more, and decided to come back on the HoHo soon. :)

Beyond

So what if he is smart

It doesn’t means he would love.

So what if he is popular

It doesn’t makes me special.

So what if he is rich

It can’t buy time.

So what if he is the best

Perfection can get boring.

So what if he is right

The heart doesn’t judges.

So what if he is well spoken

Those words aren’t for me.

So what if he is desirable

My eyes don’t look for a tag.

So what if he is well dressed

Even simple can be best.

So what if I refuse to it

My life is more than that.

To all those who are confused

Just remember, there are some Better than the Best.

Life is a box of chocolates….and I got a good one this time :)

The last 10 days I had to go through some grueling time with exams on my head. It could have been appopriately called “a series of unfortunate events”. There were an awful series of 6 papers back to back with all kind of students activities happening in between. Barely 12 hrs between some papers is the worst that can happen to a student scared of both finance and operations.  To add to this disaster taking place, there was a Harvard case study in a finance paper !…..the question paper was lengthier and heavier than my answer sheet :D  The nights were horrifying with the wait to give the paper next morning, and sleep was a rare phenomenon. But as they all say, bad things do come to an end. And finally these exams did too.

The first thing that I did was to gather that little bit of sleep I badly needed. Then of course, all the “not-so-awesome” movies I missed. But the best part of all, which made the end so much better, was the news of “My Friends Are Getting Married.” Not one or two….but Three. I was happy, elated, excited and tensed (what am I going to wear !).

Suddenly, all my friends are getting married. There were so many  thoughts going through my mind

- what is happening to all of them !!!!

- they are so lucky to find “the one”

- wow, they’ll be doing all the shopping now

- finally, i’ll get to wear some nice wedding type clothes….given that I have not attended one in a really long time

- i’ll do the invitations, that’s the best part

- Shit, now my parents would start thinking of my marriage !

- I need to reserve my excitement a bit !

And yes, those are the crazy thoughts that cross my mind. But nevertheless, I am one happy person right now and would live this moment like a Queen :D

One thing I have learned in last few days, life is a mix of good and bad – I can either look at the bad and keep crying over it. Or, I can look at the good and smile for it. This one moment definitely deserves a Big Smile :)
